Visitors can climb a short distance down the mine’s main shaft.

The main mine shaft entry has a viewing area several feet below the surface, where the sleds were loaded with workers and shot down the steeply inclined shaft at 600 feet per minute to their work areas. The mined ore was moved up at 1200 feet per minute, all accomplished by steel cables that workers controlled from the hoist house located behind the head-frame (which no longer exists) and the mine entrance. Most of the buildings still have much of their equipment in place, from giant lathes powered by overhead pulleys to the tool-sharpening shop where hundreds of rock drills were re-sharpened daily.
